Softcover, perfect-bound, bi-color printed paper wraps. Great ads front and rear. Condition overall is good to very good. Page edges have some dark spotting, very slight edge wear. The seller's stamp "R.A. Lockwood, Pharmacist, Red Bank N.J." is on the front wrap, the title page, and on the rear pane. Stamp's style is appropriate to the period of the publication.
John Wurtele Lovell was an independent American publisher who successfully challenged the established literary publishing houses of the mid-nineteenth century to publish popular and inexpensive editions of classic British literature, science and religion. Lovell's Library was a collection of hundreds of separate titles, published beginning in 1883 as a weekly series, later becoming tri-weekly and finally as a daily publication. Publication of these editions continued until 1890. At it's peak, Lovell's company published over seven million cheap books a year, earning him the nickname of Book-A-Day Lovell. The paperback editions sold for ten, fifteen, twenty or thirty cents. There were also hardcover editions of many of the better selling or better known works.
