Antique 1913 Rumford Baking Powder Recipe Cookbook Color Litho Cover
Rumford Recipe Book 1913 with color Lithograph cover
Fannie Merritt Farmer, Lily Haxworth Wallace, and Mildred Maddocks
Rumford Chemical Works
1913
An original and rare Rumford Baking Powder cook book from 1913. 24 page saddle stapled booklet, 9 1/4" X 6". Over 80 recipes included, with a section on "Casserole Cookery", "Home Made Candies", and the main section, ""Rumford Tested Recipes" with a wide vaireity of breads (Biscuits, roll,s. muffins, cakes, puffs, cookies, waffles, and more), and other recipes for salads, soufflé, fruit compotes, main dishes, and much more. There is a page discussing the new "Fireless" cookery which apparently cooked with a "radiator" that was preheated on a heat source such as a gas burner before being placed in the cooker. Fascinating.
The senior author for this edition of the Rumford Recipe Book is Fannie Merritt Farmer of Boston Cooking School fame. This also marks the change from the earlier titles as a "receipt" book to "recipe" book.
Saddle stapled booklet. A nice copy of this rare, antique cookbook. The covers are torn along the spine-fold for about one-third of the way from the bottom. The color lithograph image is a little age-darkened and have mild edge wear, with a closed tear along the fore-edge, another tear near the perforation for the handing loop. Quite unusual is that there is a cotton string hanging loop still in place (see picture). There are some mild chips along the edges. The interior is clean and unmarked except for one recipe (Brandy Wafers, page 9) which has a simple penciled "X". I guess that one wasn't a favorite of the original owner.
Please see our other listings for
an exceedingly rare French translation of this cook book, with identical cover
art. In comparing the recipes the two seem to
have many but not all the recipes of it's opposite language sibling.
