Astounding Science Fiction July 1939
John W. Campbell, Jr (editor)
Southern Illinois University Press
1981
First edition
Reprint of the July, 1939 issue of Astounding Science Fiction, featuring articles by established sci-fi writers such as Nat Schachner, Ross Rocklynne, and C.L. Moore, and two newcomers, Issac Asimov and A.E. van Vogt. Considered by many to mark the opening of the Golden Age of Science Fiction. This issue, edited by John W. Campbell, with the featured cover story "Black Defender," is the first story published by A.E. van Vogt. Isaaac Asimov, after garnering nine rejections slips for nine submissions, finally scored with his tenth submission, making his "Trends" the first of a long line of stories to appear in what he and other writers considered the premier science fiction magazine.
In addition to the excellent science fiction and non-fiction, this reprint of that seminal issue contains an epilogue in which A.E. van Vogt, Isaac Asimov, and Ross Rocklynne comment on their own work, their feelings toward Astounding, and especially their relationships with John W. Campbell, Jr.
