David Howard Hitchcock (1861-1942). Regarded as one of the most important painters of Hawaiian landscapes. Born in 1861 on Hilo, studied art in Honolulu and Oberlin College in Ohio before meeting Jules Tavernier, becoming his disciple and student. After Tavernier's death, Hitchcock left the islands to study in Paris, becoming the first native born Hawaiian to receive professional art training. In the last decade of the 19th century and into the 20th, Hitchcock established his reputation as the foremost Hawaiian landscape painter. He was actively painting until shortly before his death at age 81. His story is lovingly presented here by his daughter and companion, Helen Hitchcock Maxon.
