White's important contribution examining the conflict between science and religion (specifically dogmatic theology) dealing with the dichotomous relationship existing between these two positions. This theme was a major focus of much of White's work, evident even in his vision as a founder of Cornell University that the university would stand as "an asylum for science -- where truth shall be sought for truth's sake, not stretched or cut exactly to fit Revealed Religion".
