Sixty Years on the Brazos
The Life and Letters of Dr. Washington Lockhart

Mrs. Jonnie Lockhart Wallis
in association with Laurance L. Hill

Texian Press
1967 Reprint edition (originally 1930 private printing of 200 copies)

John Washington Lockhart lived on the lower and middle Brazos River (Texas) from 1840 to 1900. His book is not a chronological history, nor even an attempt to depict all that happened in this eventful period; rather it is a summary of Lockhart's life that includes his description of the Texas that he knew. Lockhart came to Texas when he was only a lad of sixteen, settling at Washington-on-the-Brazos.

Forty-eight separate articles are included to form the nucleus of the book. In the articles Lockhart relates simply and with relish interesting happenings in the lives of early Texans. As can be plainly seen in the relations, Sam Houston was a special hero to Lockhart and that this land of the Lone Star was very close to his heart.

Lockhart presents an intimate look at Washington-on-the-Brazos and its people; the historic buildings, including old Independence Hall. The book is full of anecdotes told with great humor. A focus of a number of these relations is the indigenous Indian population and Lockhart was absorbed with the tales of captivity of white persons by Indians. He saw them in their native environment, visited Torrey's Trading Post on the Brazos where he observed the civilizing process and looks on as Sam Houston dealt with the Indians.

Hard cover Blue cloth over boards, bright gilt lettering and lines on spine. Frontispiece, 16 plates of illustrations, xi, 342 pages including index. Octavo. Graphic dust jacket with Lockhart crest.

Very good in fair dust jacket. Front board has a wrinkle that appears to be a publishing artifact and there is a light tea-colored stain on the upper fore corner of the front end papers, else clean, unmarked, square and tight. Dust jacket poor to fair with chips and edge wear, not price clipped ($7.50), now protected in archival Brodart poly wrapper.
